Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery passed through Montana on their way to hopefully find the fabled Northwest Passage that was a supposed all-water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. They were not met with such fortune, though in their travels they did manage to meet local tribes and find suitable locations for forts and trading posts in the new Louisiana Purchase and places beyond. Around Missoula and particularly south into the Bitterroot Valley are locations for Corps of Discovery enthusiasts to further quench their thirst for anything Lewis and Clark.
