It's one of those political things, part of the business, and I really shouldn't complain because I've been on a lot of records that have been hits. I remember [pause]. Then I got a call from Bob Ezrin, the producer, and he asked me if I would do an album with Lou Reed. So I decided to try and teach myself. All the backing tracks were done within six weeks in the fall of '85. And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? I had very mixed emotions I thought, Heres a good opportunity for me, but under the worst conditions. Asked whether the possibility of being offered the job had occurred to him, he said: Did I have a feeling it was going to go that way? Maybe I should just speak for myself. I was always a songwriting sort of guy. But like I said, at that point, I realized I wasnt singing for, or co-writing with the guys, for critics. I was the one who really wanted to do it. Im not sure what Im gonna do with it yet, but I got a lot of material, and a lot of it I really like. I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. And no contracts were really binding me to have to be or do anything anymore. I mean, he's one of the most underrated yet not underrated because anybody that has heard his playing is respectful, especially drummers. I believe we were in Hawaii. It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. I think he disliked Bowie so he was giving him a hard time, and me too. NoI didnt think Journey was done. But Im just not in it for the money. In my mind, he cracked the stone when he went out and did our stuff without us. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. In the beginning, it felt extremely freeing. Is it just that people can relate to the sentiment in that song? Because since Mayhold on, Ive got the fax on my wall, in my studio. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. I got a panic in me. Do you get tired of it being defined by his presence or his absence? And so at that point, I knew I had some chemistry writing with him, even though it was very different from anything Id done before. Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. Everybody went against me on that issue. So, because of his wishes, thats the way things go down. I Thought Mentalphysics Was New-Age Nonsense. And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. Weve worked so hard. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. One huge mag, with not one edit. And I think without the year off, I wouldnt ever have gotten to that place. Some of that stuff never goes away. Call it anything. That was the one that had Oh Sherrie on it? We lived together when I first joined the band. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. Lets roll. Every guy in the band would take about a 1O-chorus solo on each tune. I did not use steroids! **When you started your solo career, was that the beginning of the end for Journey? Career. The manager, Herbie, fought for me to be in that band, when they werent sure. Nobody knew, yknow? I was writing for the people who might want to listen to it. Okay. You even had your own video game. I like doing all of that. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the band members. I could never tune it properly, but then I put one of the cast rims on it and it made such a big difference, it's unbelievable. ReallyI stay away from it, because its really none of my business now. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it. The girls are screaming Just a small-town girl. Theyre screaming it at clubs. So when you told them you couldnt do it anymoreat that point, were you thinking of it as a hiatus, or a breakup? Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. So it was the best of all worlds, I think, when I got into a band that had the ability to play in a progressive way but was open-minded about writing songs. You mentioned arguingwas there a lot of that? Which was, I gotta get signed before its too late. [laughs]. I know I'm going to do an album sometime. In a new interview with ABC Audio, Perry reflected. What doesn't is a scrappy rhythm backing. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. Just a little bit east of the Musicians Institute. Otherwise, the band would never know where the hell I was.
